About Greg Ennis
A multi-genre, multi-instrument composer, arranger, producer and performer
My life has been steeped in music. For over 25 years I have composed and performed with numerous jazz groups in California, most notably the jazz fusion group Molto Boppo and currently with the Blue Skies Trio. But I still play Chopin, Ravel and Scarlatti on my grandfather's now-restored 1923 Knabe baby grand (he's in the photo to the left playing violin in the St. Louis Symphony).
I am privileged to have come from a family of musicians. In addition to my grandfather, my mother performed as a child prodigy pianist on the radio. My sister focused on voice, my brother on trumpet, while I moved easily from my classical piano training (with Mortimer Markoff) to jazz guitar and keyboards.
My instrumental skills today go beyond simply piano and guitar because I view my software tools as musical instruments in themselves. These tools provide expanded avenues for creativity, complementing proficiency on physical instruments. In particular, my music today is expressed with the help of Presonus Studio One digital audio workstation software, Sibelius music composition software, Roland Integra-7 sound modules, and a Yamaha MOX8 music production synthesizer. Mastering these tools has required the same discipline I have applied throughout my musical career.
My primary guitar these days is a Martin DCP4 acoustic.
I was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2015 as an "artist in residence" for the Mariposa County School District.
My compositions span many genres: chamber music to Latin jazz, orchestral to big band, music for film and games, incidental vignettes and fully realized large scores.
